Joan Sinclair, Family Mediator
Family Mediation is a constructive, non-adversarial, solution-focused way to resolve family issues which are inevitable with life's difficult transitions such as separation, divorce, parent/teen relationships, adult/children and aging parent issues. It can help to reduce the pain, time, and expense of finding solutions. A mediator, who is a professionally trained impartial third party, assists you and other involved family members in defining new relationships, roles, and responsibilities. While family mediation is not necessarily therapy, it is therapeutic as a means of resolving family issues. It provides you with an opportunity to face each other directly without risk while you identify and address the unresolved conflicts that get in the way of negotiating a successful agreement. Study after study shows that mediated agreements result in less litigation than do imposed court judgements. |
Mediation can benefit parents involved in conflict in several ways:
ü It allows the parents themselves to determine what the issues are that they want to mediate and the order in which they with to deal with them.
ü It fosters a sense of cooperation between the parents rather than an adversarial atmosphere. This can be especially important if there are children involved.
ü A mediator can assist the parents to work out an agreement that is creative and meets the unique needs of the parents and their children.
Mediation can be a time effective and comparatively inexpensive process.
